The Theth to Valbona trek is one of Europe's most spectacular yet affordable hikes. Complete guide including route details, accommodation, packing list, and
The Albanian Alps (Accursed Mountains) offer some of Europe's most dramatic mountain scenery without the crowds of the Swiss or Austrian Alps. The Theth to Valbona trek is the region's signature hike.
Distance: 16km Duration: 6-8 hours Difficulty: Moderate to challenging Best Season: June-September Elevation Gain: 700m up, 900m down
Start early from Theth village (750m). The trail initially follows the valley floor before beginning a steady climb through beech forests. After about 90 minutes, you'll reach the tree line and continue climbing through alpine meadows with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.
The pass (1,795m) offers breathtaking 360-degree views. This is the highest point of the trek and an ideal spot for photos and snacks. In summer, you'll likely encounter shepherds with their flocks.
The descent begins steeply through rocky terrain before entering beautiful forests. Follow the Valbona River valley, crossing several wooden bridges. The trail becomes gentler as you approach Valbona village (900m).
Book guesthouses in advance, especially in peak season (July-August):
Theth: Traditional stone guesthouses like Bujtina e Gjelit or Shpella Guesthouse (€15-25/night)
Valbona: Rilindja Guesthouse or Valbona Hostel (€15-30/night)
To Theth: Furgon (minibus) from Shkodër (3 hours, €10-15) on rough mountain roads
From Valbona: Ferry across Koman Lake to Koman, then furgon to Shkodër (full day journey)
The trail is well-marked but can be challenging in poor weather. Start early to avoid afternoon storms. While bears exist in the region, attacks are extremely rare. Make noise while hiking and keep food secured. Mobile phone coverage is limited.
