Built in the 13th century, expanded by Ali Pasha of Ioannina in the 19th, used as a prison by Zog, the Italians, the Germans, and finally the communists Gjirokastër Castle has absorbed 700 years of violence and politics. Inside: a captured US Air Force jet (from 1957), an arms museum, and a tower where political prisoners were held until 1991. The view over the stone city below is unobstructed.
